This week were going to be talking about setting up your study routine for productivity. As well as a method called the Pomodoro method which I just recently learned about. Cath Anne: [00:01:40] Im sure that exams, papers, and group projects are starting to ramp up. Everyone has probably been over their syllabi and they know what is coming for this semester. Last week we talked about setting goals, and this week were going to talk about how to set up your study space for success and so that youll have some somewhere that you enjoy going and somewhere that you will go to study. Cath Anne: [00:02:14] I just wanted to quickly ask.: Is there anything in particular that you really need when youre studying? Whether it be a certain book, your glasses, or a cup of tea, water perhaps. Are there any like real necessities that you need before you start a study session? For me, its my tea or coffee in the morning. This is an herbal tea. Cath Anne: [00:03:02] (Instagram Viewer) Trevor says he needs a Red Bull. Yeah, well that makes sense if youre studying late at night and you need some extra energy. Tea for you to too, G Kaur. I do love water but its just nice to have that warm beverage. I know what it is theres something special about it. Trevor has a Red Bull to keep him motivated. I can totally understand that. Cath Anne: [00:03:33] The first thing I wanted to discuss is how to set up your actual physical space for studying. Here I want to stop the desk essentials. Yes, I said desk although it is tempting to sit in your favorite chair or on the couch when youre studying, youre way more likely to fall asleep or be tempted to watch Netflix if you are sitting in a more comfortable position to do your studying. You will really want to set up a desk space, whether it be in your bedroom, whether it be in your living room or in an office, if youre so lucky to have one. Its a great idea just to set up a desk thats dedicated to studying because you dont want to study in your bed, you dont want to study in the couch because youre going to be way more likely to fall asleep. Cath Anne: [00:04:26] Now that we have our desk, there are some desk essentials that I highly recommend you having, and you have on hand for your study session. So, the first thing is water. Youre going to want to have water on hand to keep you hydrated throughout your study session. This will also minimize the time it takes to get up and go to the kitchen and get a glass of water which can, of course, lead to distractions and if youre if youre like me you might also want to keep it like a small snack on hand. Maybe, raisins or almonds or peanuts in a little cup, just so that you dont have to keep getting up and going to the kitchen or going somewhere else to get a snack. You want to have water and maybe a little snack on hand when youre sitting down for a longer study session. Cath Anne: [00:05:15] Another thing that might sound a little funny, but its a good idea to have something like an oil diffuser or a scented candle on your desk so that it adds a gentle aroma to the area. You could use something like lavender oil or lemongrass oil. Something thats very light and thats going to keep you focused. It also adds some coziness and relaxation to the space. It makes the space more welcoming. Like I said it does sound a little silly to spend that much time on your study space, but if you think about it, studying can be really difficult and when youre sitting down to study you want to associate it with positive feelings. You want to make yourself comfortable. When you do these extra little steps, you are more likely to associate studying with the positive feelings that come with setting up your space. Thats why Im recommending adding some of these little touches that can increase your feelings of positivity when youre going to study because we all know we dont all love to study. It can be really great to kind of add these little touches here and there to increase your feelings of positivity. Cath Anne: [00:06:39] This goes along with the last suggestion, try to have something fresh on your desk, a bouquet of flowers or a little succulent plant. Having something fresh on your desk can lift your mood. It gives you something nice to look at and it brings light to the desk. It also has the added benefit of creating some oxygen while youre working so that you can stay focused. Cath Anne: [00:07:12] Another thing they want to make sure is that youre tidy and organized. Make sure that you keep a tight organized space. Dont place everything on your desk, just the things that you would need for that particular study session. You want just the essentials like some pens, highlighters, textbooks, anything that you might need. You might need your computer. Anything that you might need but nothing more because you dont want to be distracted. Originally, I was going to suggest that you could have your agenda or your or your bullet journal on hand. But, in this case where as youre going to be focusing specifically on studying I would suggest that less is more. The more you have on the desk, the more likely you are to be distracted. Cath Anne: [00:07:54] Another good idea, and I know everyones not going to like this idea, shut your phone off or put it away from your desk so maybe you plug it into an outlet across the room. Just make it so your phone is not as readily available Of course you have the potential to get bored while studying and youre going to be tempted to look at your phone. The more difficult it is to access your phone the more likely you are going to continue studying and not be distracted. Cath Anne: [00:08:29] Now that we have a physical space laid out. Its time to start studying and I want to discuss this idea of a pre-study routine. You also want to be really intentional about how you are presenting yourself when you study and the steps that you take to start over a successful study session. When you started studying you want to make sure that you are wearing something comfortable. Unless youre going to the library or out in public somewhere to a cafe, it doesnt really matter what you look like when you study Dress comfortably, avoid the temptation to fiddle with your clothing. If youre wearing an itchy sweater you might feel itchy and comfortable during your study session. You want to make sure that youre very comfortable. Wear a nice pair of easy fitting jeans and a nice hoodie and you should be good to go. Make sure youre warm enough as well. Cath Anne: [00:09:35] Then make a warm beverage. This has been a theme, as you can see, whether its tea, coffee, hot chocolate, having a warm bed beverage can say no to your brain that youre sitting down to do some work, while also being comfortable. If youre not one for caffeine, but you want the relaxing aspect of tea with the buzz, you could opt for an herbal tea instead. Cath Anne: [00:10:00] Now that those little touches are out of the way, before you get studying it is actually beneficial to look at your agenda and look at what you need to get done. Take your agenda or your bullet journal and see what you want to get accomplished for that session. Physically write down small time allotments for yourself and set deadlines. For example, you might want to schedule to work on one task from 5:00p.m. until 6:00p.m. and then you might set a second task from 6:30pm until 7:00pm. When you make these little appointments for yourself youre much more likely to commit to you and follow through with them. They also help you stay on track. Cath Anne: [00:10:45] Thats a little like what we were talking about last week is to set positive and possible goals for yourself so that you are way more likely to follow through on them. When you set deadlines for yourself, youre absolutely more likely to complete them. [00:11:04] Its also really important to get in the right mindset when you plan study. This is where you can begin with five minutes before you start studying and write down three things that you are grateful for. This will help you to stay positive and have a focused mindset. You may also want to write down somewhere or think about how youre going to reward yourself when you have finished these tasks. Maybe its a relaxing bath or watching your favorite show on Netflix with your partner. Whatever it is make sure that you have a reward lined up so that you are more motivated to follow through on your tasks. Its also a really good idea to sit near an open window or a door so you have access to some fresh air. The plants can give you some oxygen, but it is also really good to have some fresh air. As long as its not too cold outside. Cath Anne: [00:11:54] Then youre going to actually begin studying so you sit down at your desk. You set a timer for 20 to 30 minutes and work until the timer and goes off. Now this is where you might need your cell phone if you like to have that for a timer. You can keep that on your desk. Ill talk a little bit about some apps that you can use to kind of control your urges too to look at your phone if you do use it as a timer. You can also set timers on your computer for 20 to 30 minutes. Again, Ill talk about that as we go along. Cath Anne: [00:12:33] Once you finish that 20 to 30-minute allotment of work, you can take a little break before you continue your work. There are a couple things you can do when youre taking your break. The best thing is to get moving. You want to take a step away from your desk. Give your eyes or rest from looking at your computer or staring at your textbook. You want to get up and maybe do some stretching, do some yoga postures. You might reveal your cup of tea or your water. You might pet your cat. It is really important to give yourself a break. Just getting up from there so that youre not feeling weighed down by the study session. Cath Anne: [00:13:15] Typical study breaks should be between five and 10 minutes. Whatever you do dont make it longer than five to ten minutes, but make sure that youre getting up and getting moving and then you can return to your studying. Once youve completed a task, after that 20 to 30 minutes if you completed your task, give it a check off on your list. That gives you a sense of accomplishment. It also gives you a sense of being able to look back to see the pattern of what youve completed. This actually serves as a motivational factor and we talked about that a little bit last week in that when we document our goals and the things that weve achieved, it motivates us. This way you can remember to go back to them afterward. Youre not getting distracted by those questions then and looking through your textbook or Googling something youre writing down on these questions and you are going to go back to them afterwards. You can then go back through your notes and figure out the answer to the question. Or you might approach your professor and ask them as well. Taking the time during your study session to figure those questions out its just going to be a distraction. Make sure you have a little notepad, so you can write down your questions as they come out through your study session. Cath Anne: [00:15:10] As well, you might not have all the time in the world to complete every task that you set out to do, especially if youre working on a time constraint and you are a student. You definitely want to make the most of your time. If you are not able to finish one task, make sure that you write it down as well as so that you can go back to it during your next study session. Cath Anne: [00:15:59] Now to move on to what I talked about: the Pomodoro Method. The Pomodoro method can help with the P word which is procrastination. We all know about procrastination. It is not just a student thing. It is absolutely something that can continue into the working world as well. Its really helpful to develop strategies to combat procrastination. Cath Anne: [00:16:36] I find that procrastination can be most challenging when it happens at the beginning of a study session or a work session. You dont always want to get started on a task because there is this mental resistance there and you would way rather be looking on your phone or playing a videogame or reading a book, anything else but doing the task that you have set out to do. Today I want to talk about a little bit about how to actually address that problem. Cath Anne: [00:17:17] Its almost like the more you try to push yourself to do that task, the last you want to do it. Its about getting over that hump of resistance. Once you do get over that hump then youre able to work really intensely for long periods of time. Sometimes its just that initial starting point and then you can work. I wanted to talk about how to get over that initial resistance that procrastination can cause for us. Also, if you are someone that procrastinates throughout a task this strategy can work for you as well. Cath Anne: [00:18:20] The problem with this mental resistance is that our brain is way more likely to want to do something thats easier. Studying or working or doing something thats more challenging and difficult for the brain it takes effort. The brain doesnt always want to do that. What we have to do is we have to give it, motivation to do that and we have to almost externalize the motivation. Youll see what I mean. Pick one particular task to work on. If you are studying for a biology test, pick chapter one thats going to be your first task. You dont want a list, you dont want multiple tasks, you want one task. As I mentioned before, you want to set a timer for between 20 and 30 minutes. The recommended time for the Pomodoro Method is actually 25 minutes. Set a timer for 25 minutes and work as intensely as you can on that one task. If Im studying for a biology test, then Im going through my chapter one and Im studying as hard as I can for that first 25 minutes. Cath Anne: [00:19:36] Like I mentioned if you do get distracted by a call a text or wanting to look something up on Google, have your notepad beside you and write it down so you can go back to it once youve finished your study session. When the timer goes off take a five-minute break, and repeat that process three more times. Set it for 25. Take a 5-minute break. Set up for 25. Take a 5 minute break. You want to break your study session up into 25-minute allotments. Once you have done the four sessions, take a longer break. Maybe half an hour. Have some lunch or do a yoga session; go for a walk. Then you can start the process all over again. Cath Anne: [00:20:40] This technique seems super simple, but its very powerful. It can help us get it over our procrastination because what it does is it externalizes the need for discipline. It takes the onus away from you and puts it into the timer. Instead of you having to be strong-willed enough to stop yourself from being distracted, it puts the onus on the timer. Then you arent relying on your own self-control but rather the time is being measured by that timer. Using the timer is probably one of the most effective ways that has been found to work. Writing your distractions down and in combination with this helps to minimize the connection between the craving for distraction and its fulfilment. Cath Anne: [00:21:32] Essentially, youre creating space between these desires for distraction and you actually fulfilling them. When you do that, when you take the time to write down your distractions, youre actually strengthening your focus muscles. Over time if you keep practicing that, your focus muscle and your brain is going to is going to become stronger and stronger and you arent going to get as distracted as easily. Cath Anne: [00:22:07] I dont particularly study anymore, because Im not a student, but Ive been using it a lot in my own work. I do work from home as a freelance writer, and this can be really helpful when youre trying to meet a deadline or when you have some work to do. Just out one task for yourself, working really intensely for 25 minutes, having a mini break and then doing that over and over again. Youll actually be surprised at how quickly that 25 minutes passes. It seems like a long time, but when youre working youre kind of in that intense focused mindset. And I think also having the time limited automatically rewards the brain and its like, Oh if I finish this then Im going to be able to take a break. Its like that built in reward mechanism, which is really cool. Cath Anne: [00:23:06] Of course there are other ways to make this technique more useful. Theres an app called Cold Turkey Writer, which you can download on your computer actually and it essentially converts your computer into just a typewriter until you meet a certain word count. This can be really helpful and when youre writing a paper or so youre writing a 2000-word paper, you might say youre Cold Turkey Writer for a thousand words. It would only act as a typewriter, and not allow you to get on the Internet or anything until you meet a thousand words. Take a little break and then do the same thing for the next thousand words. Cath Anne: [00:23:45] I thought that was a really cool option if you youre someone that gets easily distracted while youre writing papers. The person that invented the Pomodoro Method actually started out with that 25 minutes and personally I do find that works really well. But, if you wanted to extend it if you had a longer study session to do then certainly, experiment with whatever works best for you. Cath Anne: [00:27:20] I have found a helpful app which is called TIDE. You can use that for a timer. Its a free app. I have an iPhone and I believe its available for Android as well. I highly recommend it because what you can do is you can set your 25 minutes, and it will run out the clock. If you do escape the app, itll stop your timer. Then itll stop your study session. But, it also plays relaxing music. Today I was using it and there were you know there were waves sounds, there were forest sounds. I find those kinds of noises help me to focus. It uses the Pomodoro Method. What I actually do is I take my phone and I put it on my little tripod that I have actually for this show so that I can see the timer, but Im also makes it more awkward for me to grab it when I put it on the stand. So, its less tempting for me to go on Instagram or Facebook or text someone while Im doing so. Cath Anne: [00:28:59] I hope that you guys enjoyed this session. Cath Anne: [00:01:40] Im sure that exams, papers, and group projects are starting to ramp up. Everyone has probably been over their syllabi and they know what is coming for this semester. Last week we talked about setting goals, and this week were going to talk about how to set up your study space for success and so that youll have some somewhere that you enjoy going and somewhere that you will go to study. Cath Anne: [00:02:14] I just wanted to quickly ask.: Is there anything in particular that you really need when youre studying? Whether it be a certain book, your glasses, or a cup of tea, water perhaps. Are there any like real necessities that you need before you start a study session? For me, its my tea or coffee in the morning. This is an herbal tea. Cath Anne: [00:03:02] (Instagram Viewer) Trevor says he needs a Red Bull. Yeah, well that makes sense if youre studying late at night and you need some extra energy. Tea for you to too, G Kaur. I do love water but its just nice to have that warm beverage. I know what it is theres something special about it. Trevor has a Red Bull to keep him motivated. I can totally understand that. Cath Anne: [00:03:33] The first thing I wanted to discuss is how to set up your actual physical space for studying. Here I want to stop the desk essentials. Yes, I said desk although it is tempting to sit in your favorite chair or on the couch when youre studying, youre way more likely to fall asleep or be tempted to watch Netflix if you are sitting in a more comfortable position to do your studying. You will really want to set up a desk space, whether it be in your bedroom, whether it be in your living room or in an office, if youre so lucky to have one. Its a great idea just to set up a desk thats dedicated to studying because you dont want to study in your bed, you dont want to study in the couch because youre going to be way more likely to fall asleep. Cath Anne: [00:04:26] Now that we have our desk, there are some desk essentials that I highly recommend you having, and you have on hand for your study session. So, the first thing is water. Youre going to want to have water on hand to keep you hydrated throughout your study session. This will also minimize the time it takes to get up and go to the kitchen and get a glass of water which can, of course, lead to distractions and if youre if youre like me you might also want to keep it like a small snack on hand. Maybe, raisins or almonds or peanuts in a little cup, just so that you dont have to keep getting up and going to the kitchen or going somewhere else to get a snack. You want to have water and maybe a little snack on hand when youre sitting down for a longer study session. Cath Anne: [00:05:15] Another thing that might sound a little funny, but its a good idea to have something like an oil diffuser or a scented candle on your desk so that it adds a gentle aroma to the area. You could use something like lavender oil or lemongrass oil. Something thats very light and thats going to keep you focused. It also adds some coziness and relaxation to the space. It makes the space more welcoming. Like I said it does sound a little silly to spend that much time on your study space, but if you think about it, studying can be really difficult and when youre sitting down to study you want to associate it with positive feelings. You want to make yourself comfortable. When you do these extra little steps, you are more likely to associate studying with the positive feelings that come with setting up your space. Thats why Im recommending adding some of these little touches that can increase your feelings of positivity when youre going to study because we all know we dont all love to study. It can be really great to kind of add these little touches here and there to increase your feelings of positivity. Cath Anne: [00:06:39] This goes along with the last suggestion, try to have something fresh on your desk, a bouquet of flowers or a little succulent plant. Having something fresh on your desk can lift your mood. It gives you something nice to look at and it brings light to the desk. It also has the added benefit of creating some oxygen while youre working so that you can stay focused. Cath Anne: [00:07:12] Another thing they want to make sure is that youre tidy and organized. Make sure that you keep a tight organized space. Dont place everything on your desk, just the things that you would need for that particular study session. You want just the essentials like some pens, highlighters, textbooks, anything that you might need. You might need your computer. Anything that you might need but nothing more because you dont want to be distracted. Originally, I was going to suggest that you could have your agenda or your or your bullet journal on hand. But, in this case where as youre going to be focusing specifically on studying I would suggest that less is more. The more you have on the desk, the more likely you are to be distracted. Cath Anne: [00:07:54] Another good idea, and I know everyones not going to like this idea, shut your phone off or put it away from your desk so maybe you plug it into an outlet across the room. Just make it so your phone is not as readily available Of course you have the potential to get bored while studying and youre going to be tempted to look at your phone. The more difficult it is to access your phone the more likely you are going to continue studying and not be distracted. Cath Anne: [00:08:29] Now that we have a physical space laid out. Its time to start studying and I want to discuss this idea of a pre-study routine. You also want to be really intentional about how you are presenting yourself when you study and the steps that you take to start over a successful study session. When you started studying you want to make sure that you are wearing something comfortable. Unless youre going to the library or out in public somewhere to a cafe, it doesnt really matter what you look like when you study Dress comfortably, avoid the temptation to fiddle with your clothing. If youre wearing an itchy sweater you might feel itchy and comfortable during your study session. You want to make sure that youre very comfortable. Wear a nice pair of easy fitting jeans and a nice hoodie and you should be good to go. Make sure youre warm enough as well. Cath Anne: [00:09:35] Then make a warm beverage. This has been a theme, as you can see, whether its tea, coffee, hot chocolate, having a warm bed beverage can say no to your brain that youre sitting down to do some work, while also being comfortable. If youre not one for caffeine, but you want the relaxing aspect of tea with the buzz, you could opt for an herbal tea instead. Cath Anne: [00:10:00] Now that those little touches are out of the way, before you get studying it is actually beneficial to look at your agenda and look at what you need to get done. Take your agenda or your bullet journal and see what you want to get accomplished for that session. Physically write down small time allotments for yourself and set deadlines. For example, you might want to schedule to work on one task from 5:00p.m. until 6:00p.m. and then you might set a second task from 6:30pm until 7:00pm. When you make these little appointments for yourself youre much more likely to commit to you and follow through with them. They also help you stay on track. Cath Anne: [00:10:45] Thats a little like what we were talking about last week is to set positive and possible goals for yourself so that you are way more likely to follow through on them. When you set deadlines for yourself, youre absolutely more likely to complete them. [00:11:04] Its also really important to get in the right mindset when you plan study. This is where you can begin with five minutes before you start studying and write down three things that you are grateful for. This will help you to stay positive and have a focused mindset. You may also want to write down somewhere or think about how youre going to reward yourself when you have finished these tasks. Maybe its a relaxing bath or watching your favorite show on Netflix with your partner. Whatever it is make sure that you have a reward lined up so that you are more motivated to follow through on your tasks. Its also a really good idea to sit near an open window or a door so you have access to some fresh air. The plants can give you some oxygen, but it is also really good to have some fresh air. As long as its not too cold outside. Cath Anne: [00:11:54] Then youre going to actually begin studying so you sit down at your desk. You set a timer for 20 to 30 minutes and work until the timer and goes off. Now this is where you might need your cell phone if you like to have that for a timer. You can keep that on your desk. Ill talk a little bit about some apps that you can use to kind of control your urges too to look at your phone if you do use it as a timer. You can also set timers on your computer for 20 to 30 minutes. Again, Ill talk about that as we go along. Cath Anne: [00:12:33] Once you finish that 20 to 30-minute allotment of work, you can take a little break before you continue your work. There are a couple things you can do when youre taking your break. The best thing is to get moving. You want to take a step away from your desk. Give your eyes or rest from looking at your computer or staring at your textbook. You want to get up and maybe do some stretching, do some yoga postures. You might reveal your cup of tea or your water. You might pet your cat. It is really important to give yourself a break. Just getting up from there so that youre not feeling weighed down by the study session. Cath Anne: [00:13:15] Typical study breaks should be between five and 10 minutes. Whatever you do dont make it longer than five to ten minutes, but make sure that youre getting up and getting moving and then you can return to your studying. Once youve completed a task, after that 20 to 30 minutes if you completed your task, give it a check off on your list. That gives you a sense of accomplishment. It also gives you a sense of being able to look back to see the pattern of what youve completed. This actually serves as a motivational factor and we talked about that a little bit last week in that when we document our goals and the things that weve achieved, it motivates us. We can see that weve been making a difference and our hard work has been of benefit. Cath Anne: [00:14:21] When you do set that timer for 20 to 30 minutes, during your study session make sure you write down any questions that pop up for you. Posing some possible examples to help her along, I may bring up particular holidays, situations that have arisen in class, and scenarios she might encounter outside of school. From there, we could begin to discuss what emotions these s tressors bring, and why she thinks those stressors cause her stress. After teaching Jessie about stress and how to identify her typical stressors, I would naturally progress to teaching her strategies that she can implement when the feelings of stress creep up. Some easy to learn strategies include: belly breathing to promote relaxation, aerobic exercise to reduce the stress, self-talk, setting short and long-term goals for activities (to promote better time management so events dont accumulate), to name just a few. I would make sure to share with Jessie that life will always pose stressors, and because we cant outrun them, it is our job to find appropriate ways to manage themone at a time. Teaching and practicing all of the different strategies together in class would allow Jessie to become comfortable with their use, and would allow her to choose the strategy that best works for her. My main goal for Jessie is to give her the tools she needs to recognize her feelings of stress, what events are causing that stress, and how she can manage her emotions effectively on her own. Stress management is a holistic process, and it will take time for her to master an understanding of her emotions and the application of strategies to manage those emotions. To support her in her process, I would have her maintain a personal journal to write in daily regarding any stress or events that arise. Additionally, I think we could work on anchor charts that could be posted for Jessie as helpful reminders around the classroom. As an example, one poster could represent The Circle of Control, and would have aspects of life that cannot be controlled listed in the outer circle, while the inner circle would have aspects of life that can be controlled. Another poster would be a list of strategies weve discussed that are beneficial for stress management, that way they can always be referencede ven in her toughest moments when the emotions overcome her. The idea is to support Jessie in conquering stress, and through practice and implementation, she will be on her way to mastering a lifelong skill that many adults even struggle to manage.

In this essay, I aim to critically evaluate the role of integrity that was introduced by Dworkin’s philosophy of law which will allow me to analyse how integrity might help judges when faced with a hard case. Pathophysiology and Anatomy of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is a kind of cancer, which is mainly found in children, but can also occur in individual of any age. This disease is also called as lymphocyticleukaemia (Bhojwani, Howard, Pui, 2009). This kind of disease is characterized by over formation of the white blood cells. The bone marrow of the patient is crowded by these cells and formation of normal blood cells is prevented. Due to the overproduction of the white blood cells, these can also enter the blood stream and to other parts of the body. This is the malignant bone marrow disease, in which the malignant cells of the acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are considered as the lymphoid precursor cells (ie, lymphoblasts) (Bhojwani, Howard, Pui, 2009). In the early stage of the disease, these cells are arrested. The arrest of these cells is caused due to the abnormal functioning of the genes. This abnormal functioning of the genes is resulted due to chromosomal translocations (Bhojwani, Howard, Pui, 2 009). The normal elements of the bone marrow are replaced by lymphoblasts and the production of the normal blood cells is reduced. This situation also results in occurrence ofanemia,thrombocytopenia, andneutropenia (Bhojwani, Howard, Pui, 2009). These problems can occur at different degrees and levels. The lymphoblasts can also multiply in various organs of the body such as liver, lymph nodes and spleen (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, 2016). Due to the changing physiological condition, patient suffers from acute pain in legs, reduced energy and becomes pale due to scarcity of the red blood cells (Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), 2016). According to the subjective data, Jenny reported acute pain in legs, she also complain about feeling tired very soon, due to which she did not want to participate in athletics. According to the objective data, doctor examined Jenny needs support in normal activities, as she was independent and energetic kid. But, now she looks pale, mildly febrile, her res piratory rate is quite high and she seems quite lethargic. No other obvious symptoms could be found in the diagnosis, but according to mid-stream specimen of urine (MSSU), full blood examination (FBE), Haemoglobin (Hb)), white blood cell count (WCC) differential), urea, electrolytes and C-reactive protein (U E), it was found that she is suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). Nursing Concerns Risk of Infection: The care plan for the children suffering with ALL requires increasing comfort and reducing the problems of the patient. The risk of infection increases in the patient due to inadequate secondary defense. The number of immature lymphocytes increases and red blood cells reduces. The capability of the defense is also reduced due to traumatized tissues. The risk of infection also increases by malnutrition. The risk of infection cannot be diagnosed through signs and symptoms (Fraser et al, 2014). Till the time problem has not occurred, the nursing interventions must be focused towards preventing any kind of infection in future. For this purpose it is important that nurse must provide an infection free environment to the patient. The nurse, who takes care of patients with infection, must not come in contact with child. Hand washing protocol must be strictly followed by all professionals and nurse. Rational: It is very important to save the patient from pathogens and infections. Since Jenny is very young she requires special care, during her initial treatment at hospital. Any kind of infection can have adverse effect on her health. The further treatment of ALL can put her on higher risk of infection. Washing hands before coming in contact with the patient reduces the chance of transfer of infection. Risk of Fluid Deficiency: The risk of fluid is very high in the patient of ALL. Due to the treatment and chemotherapies there could be excessive loss of fluid because of vomits, diarrhea, and hemorrhage (Fraser et al, 2014). Since no signs and symptoms of the risk are yet diagnosed, so nursing intervention would focus on prevention of the problem. It is important that nurse should monitor the loss of fluid. It is important to measure urine pH and gravity. This intervention would also involve measurement of weight and promote nutritional balance. Rational: For the proper functioning of the kidney, it is important that adequate fluid balance should be maintained. The continued intake of the fluid is important with regular output. If this process is hindered, it could lead to formation of stones in kidney. The adequate fluid intake also promotes urine flow and prevents precipitation of uric acid. Development Issues: As Jenny is 9 years old, she is in the age of developing a sense of mastery over her environment. Children at this age are able to describe their pain and physical condition, but their description could not be considered as completely logical. Children at this developmental stage also have their own imaginations and thinking. They can also develop thoughts about their illness that it might have caused because they have done something wrong to anyone (Fraser et al, 2014). So the nursing concern would be support child and family in understanding the reason behind illness and to develop therapeutic relationships with them (Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses in Australia, 2010). Rational: Children at the early childhood stage, they believe that there is some kind of magic in everything. These children love to try new things and have athletic abilities. This is the time, when children develop confidence in their activities, and get prepared for the future. Nursing concern would be to encourage confidence and problem solving skills in children (Koschel et al, 2012). It is important to inform child that she is not suffering because she has done anything wrong. She must be supported by her family members. It is because according to Family Centered Care (FCC) family is the most important part of a persons life (Harrison, 2010). Children are dependent on their families and parents. They develop a sense of belonging towards their families. With support of parents, children improve their emotional contact and their health outcomes are also improved (Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses in Australia, 2010). Coping and Adjustment with Illness: The chronic diseases may lead to impaired growth and retardation among children. The illness and treatment, both could be very traumatic and painful for children. As, in case of Jenny, she was an active child, but due to illness her energy is reduced and she do not feel normal. Such children may also suffer from anxiety, as they can sense that they are different from their peers. This could lead to further depressive condition (Fraser et al, 2014). Thus nursing concern would be related to adjustment and coping skills of Jenny. For the management of her illness, it is important to work in collaboration with her parents and develop and encourage coping skills in the patient. Her parent s can help her to develop coping skills and resilience (Understanding Acute leukemia, 2014). Rational: Due to long term illness and long term treatment, there could be psychological effect on children. Children might find their fault in illness and may not be able to cope with treatment. In the phase of chronic illness, parents a play a very important role in childs life. They can help their kid to develop resilience (Harrison, 2010). Resilience is the ability to develop acceptance towards, trauma, illness, threats and tragedy (Understanding Acute leukemia, 2014). Different stressors can affect the mental health of children and children may not be able manage stress. Thus, role of parents is very important, as children feel comfortable and secure only with their parents. Importance of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) in Nursing The importance of evidence based practice has been acknowledged across nursing practice and knowledge. For providing effective and safe nursing care it is essential to offer evidence based practice. Nursing care for children requires thorough understanding of evidence-based quality improvement (Koschel et al, 2012). It enhances the capabilities, knowledge and understanding of the nurses. EBP requires adoption of proper practice, education of the practice and understanding of the developmental theories in case of chronic illness in children (Fairbrother et al, 2014). According to the cognitive and developmental theories, children go through different developmental stages; these stages define their cognitive and physical growth abilities. The new approach to provide family centered care and close support to young patients EBP has been found to be very successful. EBP focuses on evaluating and reporting of the patients condition. It helps in enhancing the ability to plan care and improve the health outcomes of the patients. Evidence-based practice (EBP) provides nurses with a method to use critically appraised and scientifically proven evidence for delivering quality health care to a specific population (Fairbrother et al, 2014). This kind of approach also helps in exploring the nurses awareness towards the care and developing a positive attitude towards reporting evidences. As, in the case of Jenny, she was an active child, but due to her illness she could play and participate in her hobbies. Of Mice And Men Application Summary John Steinbeck wrote the book Of Mice & Men in 1937 during the Great Depression. The book is about the lives of two men who travel from job to job working on ranches and farms. These two main characters are George Milton and Lennie Small. George is a short, slight man and Lennie is a large, mildly retarded man. George looks out for Lennie and in return George gets companionship and protection from Lennie. The other characters in the book (all on a ranch near Soledad) are Candy, a "swamper" or handyman, Crooks, a black stable buck, Slim, the jerkline skinner, Curley, the boss's son, and Curley's new young wife. Of Mice & Men starts out with George and Lennie walking from the bus stop to the ranch where they have a new job. On their way to the ranch George instructs Lennie on how to act with their new boss so they don't lose this job, like they lost their previous one. They decide to camp next to a pool of water. They discuss how they are going to spend the money they earn to buy land and start their own farm. They sit by the fire and talk about this dream. George tells Lennie to come back to this camp place if he gets into trouble like he did in the last town. They make their beds next to the fire and go to sleep. The next morning George and Lennie walk the rest of the way to the ranch. They get settled into the bunkhouse and make friends with Candy, who gave them their bed assignments. The boss's son, Curley, comes in looking for his wife and harasses Lennie, even though George tries to answer all Curley's questions. According to Candy, "Curley's like a lot of little guys. He hates big guys. He's alla time picking scraps with big guys. Kind of like he's mad at ?em because he ain't a big guy."(49) George and Lennie also meet Curley's wife. "She had full, rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up. Her fingernails were red."(57) George and Lennie work that afternoon on the ranch and Slim, the jerkline skinner who handles the draft animals at the ranch, is impressed with how strong Lennie is and how much barley he can buck compared to other men. Candy hears George and Lennie talking about the place they are going to get and wants to go in with them. George agrees to let him, because Candy has almost enough money saved up. They all start to believe they can really obtain their dream. Curley enters the bunkhouse looking for his wife. He suspects she is with Slim and when he finds she is not, the men give Curley a bad time about his wife. Curley catches Lennie smiling, and thinks Lennie is laughing at him. He attacks Lennie but Lennie tries to retreat and just stands there and takes it as Curley hits him. Finally George yells "Get him, Lennie," (111) so Lennie grabs Curley's hand and doesn't let go. When Lennie finally lets go of Curley's hand it is crushed. To save Lennie, Slim threatens Curley and he agrees to tell everyone that he caught his hand in a piece of machinery to save face. Slim's dog had puppies and Slim gives Lennie a puppy that Lennie can't leave alone. Lennie is always out in the barn petting his puppy and one time he goes into Crook's room, which is off the barn. Crooks is the old black"stable buck." Crooks tells Lennie no one is allowed in his room, but Lennie doesn't understand and comes in and talks to Crooks anyway. Candy comes into the barn looking for Lennie and finds Lennie with Crooks. Lennie and Candy talk about their plans and Crooks asks if he can work for them. Crooks wants in on the dream too. Later, when Lennie is playing in the barn with his puppy again, the puppy nips at Lennie, so he slaps and kills it by accident. Lennie worries that he will never get to tend the rabbits, as George has been promising. He lays the puppy down and covers him up with hay but then he wants to feel the soft puppy again, so he uncovers it and begins to stroke it. Curley's wife comes in to the barn and startles Lennie. He quickly covers it up again, hoping that she won't notice the dead puppy, but it's too

We can answer this question by looking at the average ACT score for 2018and the national ACT score percentilesfor 2018.Both averages and percentiles can be used to see how your ACT score stacks up against those of other test takers. This data is important to know since colleges regularly compare applicants' test scores during the admissions process. So what are percentiles exactly? In short, percentiles tell you what percentage of test takers you scored higher than, either on the test as a whole or a particular section. Thus, the higher your ACT percentile is, the better your ACT performance will be (compared with other test takers). But before we can answer the question, "What is a good ACT score for 2018?" we need to review how the ACT scoring system actually works. The ACT uses a scoring scale of 1-36, both overall and for each of its four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. (There’s also an optional Writing section, whose score- which uses a scale of 2-12- doesnot factor into your composite ACT score.) Now, let’s look at some data: according to ACT, Inc., the average ACT score for 2018 is 20.9.In general, any score above average can be considered "good," any score below average can be considered "poor," and any score at or right around average can be considered "OK." The higher your score is above the average, the better your score (and the higher your percentile) will be. Similarly, the lower your score is below the average, the worse your score will look to schools. In this chart, we can see that to get a good ACT score for 2018, you’ll typically need to aim for at least the 75th percentile, or 24-25, on each section. If you’re aiming for a particularly high ACT score in the top 10 percent, you’ll have to get at least 28-30 on each section (coming out to a composite score of 28).Interestingly, this total score is a whole 8 points below 36, a perfect ACT score. In other words, to get an excellent ACT score, you don’t even need to break 30! On the opposite side are the poor scores, which are anything (significantly) below average.For example, a 10th percentile ACT composite score is 13, meaning that any score in the range of 1-13 is a pretty low score. Therefore, you’ll definitely want to do better than this on the test before you send ACT scores to schools. But what does all of this data mean for you specifically? Keep reading to learn how you can use this information to set a personal ACT goal score for 2018. What Is a Good 2018 ACT Score for You? While all of these 2018 ACT score percentiles and averages are helpful to know, they don’t tell you what a good ACT score for you is in particular. Ultimately, what's more important than hitting a certain percentile is getting an ACT score that's high enough to get you accepted to your chosen schools. This â€Å"goal† score can vary depending on the schools you’re applying to.For example, for someone applying to Caltech, a good ACT score would be something close to a perfect 36. However, for someone applying to Mississippi State, a good ACT score would be a lot lower, around 27. As you can see, your ACT goal score isn't always going to be the same as someone else’s- this is OK! Not everyone applies to the same schools, so there’s really no point in comparing your goal score with those of your friends or classmates. All you need to know is that this score is your ideal score. If you can hit it, you significantly raise your chances of getting accepted to your top schools.But how do you find your ACT goal score? How to Set an ACT Goal Score for 2018 Setting an ACT goal score is a pretty simple process. Follow the three steps below to get started! Step 1: Make a Chart A chart helps you easily visualize what kinds of ACT scores your schools look for in applicants. Write the names of the schools you’re applying to in the leftmost column. Then, write the headings â€Å"25th Percentile ACT Score† and â€Å"75th Percentile ACT Score† horizontally across the top. (We'll explain more about what these headings mean in the next step.) Here's an example for reference: School 25th Percentile ACT Score 75th Percentile ACT Score Northeastern Boston College NYU Brandeis Brandeis University (John Phelan/Wikimedia) Step 2: Find ACT Score Info for Your Schools Now, it’s time to start filling out your chart. The easiest way to find ACT score info for your schools is to search â€Å"[School Name] PrepScholar† on Google. Click the link to your school’s â€Å"Admission Requirements† page in our database. Once on this page, scroll down until you get to your school's ACT score info. Here’s an example of an Admission Requirements page for Northeastern University: In the ACT score info section, look for the 25th and 75th percentile ACT scores for your school. These are located directly under the "school competitiveness" graphic. In the screenshot above, you can see that Northeastern's 25th and 75th percentile scores are 31 and 34, respectively. But why these percentiles? What do they mean? The 25th and 75th percentiles for a school are the middle 50 percent, or average range, of ACT scores for admitted applicants.These percentiles tell you precisely what kinds of scores successful students have had when applying to your school. If you can’t find your school in our database, search online for â€Å"[School Name] 25th 75th percentile ACT† or â€Å"[School Name] average ACT score.† Try to look for links to your school’s official website so you can verify that the info you find is accurate. Let’s take a look at our sample chart again, now with each school's ACT scores filled out: School 25th Percentile ACT Score 75th Percentile ACT Score Northeastern 31 34 Boston College 30 33 NYU 28 32 Brandeis 29 33 Step 3: Find Your Goal Score Now that you’ve got all of the info you need, it’s time to use your chart to find your ACT goal score. Look for the highest 75th percentile score in your chart. In our example, the highest score is 34 (for Northeastern). This score will be your goal score, as it’s the one most likely to get you accepted to all of the schools in your chart. Since your composite ACT score is the average of your four section scores, you can use your goal score to estimate what score to aim for on each section.For example, if your goal score is 28, you'll know to roughly aim for 28 on the four sections, too (so that the average of them, or your composite score, comes out to 28). That being said, if you're stronger at certain sections or topics, you might want to aim for higher scores on those sections and lower scores on the others. For instance, if your goal score is 30 and you're really good at math but not so great at reading, you could aim forsomething like 32 on Math and 28 on Reading (instead of 30 on both sections). In this case, you'll still be able to hit your goal score- you're just using a different combination of section scores to get there. How Have Good ACT Scores Changed Over Time? We now know what a good ACT score for 2018 is, both overall and for you specifically. But how has the definition of a good ACT score changed over the years? Has it changed dramatically, or has it generally stayed the same? To answer these questions, let’s look at some data. The biggest change in points in any column is just 0.6 points, which isn’t a huge difference in the grand scheme of ACT scoring.Thus, we can say that ACT averages have stayed fairly consistent over time and are likely to continue to do so based on these trends. What about percentiles, though? Above, we used percentiles to show what good, OK, and poor ACT scores look like. But have the scores associated with these percentiles changed over time? The 75th percentile score stays at 25 the entire decade, while the 50th and 25th percentile scores exhibit only a nominal change of 1 point starting in 2016. It's safe to say, then, that the definition of a â€Å"good† (or an â€Å"OK† or â€Å"poor†) ACT score has stayed relatively stable over the past decade. The fact that ACT scores and their percentiles don't change much is helpful to know if you want to compare a more recent ACT score with an older one. For example, if you wanted to compare your 2017 ACT score with your older sister’s 2012 ACT score, you can easily do this using percentiles- without having to takeinto account test years or dates.
