CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS Describe a situation in which critical and creative thought could have been used for a better outcome. Describe why it is important to think critically and creative in similar situations. On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Discovery disintegrated on re-entry to the earths atmosphere, killing all seven astronauts. In retrospect, the disaster could have been prevented rather easily by a relatively simple procedure that was implemented on all subsequent shuttle missions (Burke, 2011). With better critical thinking and creativity, NASA Mission Control could have ordered the Shuttle commander Rick Husband to proceed to the International Space Station and to perform a backflip before rendezvousing with it so that the cameras on the Space Station could have performed a visual inspection of the thermal protective tiles to confirm that they were intact. That is precisely how NASA guarded against a recurrence of the disaster in the remaining Shuttle missions before the programs conclusion in 2012 (Burke, 2012). It should be relatively obvious why it was important to think more critically in that situation, given the magnitude of the tragedy that NASA always knew would resul t from any significant damage to the thermal tiles. During the post-accident investigation process, NASA recreated the strike of a piece of foam at the velocity of the impact that was filmed on the Columbias last takeoff (Burke, 2012).
